Blog Journal #4
When browsing through the ELA Standards and Technology Matrix for grades 11-12 I realized there are some guidelines recommending tools that I am currently unfamiliar with. It seems that the guidelines are relatively straight forward and I believe that given enough time to understand each standard I could manage to implement these standards. Although, since there is many technological programs and tools that are recommended for these standards that I am unfamiliar with, I feel that I could not successfully implement them at the current moment.
The resource I chose to talk about deals with social studies in the 9th to 12th grade. The resource serves as a primary source (as pictures) set that aids in the teaching of the civil rights movement. What is special about this resource is that it teaches about Freedom Riders as they rode from Washington D.C to Tallahassee Florida in 1961, and how they were eventually arrested in the Tallahassee airport. I would institute this resource in a class because I think having pictures, especially in a historical or social studies context, aids in the understanding and relatability to the lessons being learned. I also think that showing pictures of events relating to civil rights so close to home will add to student understanding even more, thereby encouraging students to pay attention.
Proficiency in internet researching is of great importance as a teacher. It is necessary for a teacher to not only be knowledgeable in the subject area, but also have a great deal of resources available in order to help student understanding. It is also important for resources to come from various contexts and even different types of mediums. Great internet researching skills will allow the teacher to increase the availability of resources and contexts to the classroom. Moving forward I think I may use the google image search the most, likely for future presentations. The google search engines we used this week reminded me of google scholar, which I have used before, that acts as a search engine but only for academic articles/journals.
