When a work is copyrighted the work is now owned by an individual or group who has the sole rights to the work. The owner of the copyright decides how and who to distribute to, if it is free or for charge, and others may not copy the work. Although in some cases a copyrighted work may still be available for free, such as through Fair Use guidelines. These guidelines state how a copyrighted work may be copied legally to be used for non-profit education purposes in a limited capacity. It is important to review what a copyright is, and general Fair Use guidelines information in the classroom before an assignment. The teacher could go into further detail depending on the age of the class and the scale of the project.
There are some issues that may arise when using technology, especially the internet, in classrooms. Two of which are academic dishonesty and student privacy. Academic dishonesty is something that has the potential to increase when the internet is being used. Going over rules revolving academic dishonesty, along with methods to avoid it, may limit mistakes that may classify as academic dishonesty. It is also important to include some sort of program to review student work, such as Turn It In. Student Privacy is also an issue that is raised when using the internet in the classroom, and is continuing to be a larger problem. I think it is important to review with the class what information is taken when using the internet, where that information goes, and how users can limit what information is being taken/how to remain more private online. The using the internet as a class, it is a good idea to have students use logins related to the school, and avoid making personal accounts that include information specific to them, especially in K-12.
The newsletter design assignment allowed me to explore and use tools in Microsoft word I hadn't used before, along with the design tools in Canva. Some of the features in Microsoft word that we used I was aware of, but had limited experience with. The newsletter design assignment was a good way for me to be introduced with various tools in order to better my design skills. While I don't know my specific career path yet, I know that knowing these tools will be useful in almost any field I am working in.
